What it does not filter
Hydren is a mechanical filter for freshwater. It does not remove viruses, salt, dissolved chemicals, heavy metals, fuel or algal toxins. Avoid water with a chemical sheen, sewage or industrial runoff, and always choose the cleanest freshwater source available. Follow local health authority advice during any water emergency.

Email usHow is this different from boiling water?
Boiling needs a stove, fuel and time, and it doesn't remove sediment, ash or cloudiness. Hydren physically filters bacteria, parasites, microplastics and sediment in seconds, with no power at all.
What does it filter, and what doesn't it?
The 0.1-micron membrane is designed to block 99.99% of waterborne bacteria and parasites, plus microplastics and sediment, based on manufacturer testing. Carbon reduces odours. It does not remove viruses, salt, dissolved chemicals or heavy metals.
How many do I need?
At least one per person. Most families keep two each: one at home and one in the car or grab bag. Our 4-pack and 6-pack bundles are built for exactly that.
Is it hard to drink through?
The first sips take a little effort while the membrane wets. Take 3–5 firm sips and it flows. Prefer not to suck? Fill the included pouch and squeeze water through the filter into a cup or bottle.
Can kids and older family members use it?
Yes. There are no chemicals or batteries. For little ones or anyone who finds sipping hard, use the squeeze pouch to fill a cup. We recommend adult supervision with young children.
Does it expire?
No. Stored clean and dry, it has no expiry date and stays ready for years. Protect a used filter from freezing, as ice can damage the membrane.
How long does one filter last?
Each filter is rated for 1,500 litres. At 2 litres a day, that's about two years of drinking water for one person. Backflush regularly to keep the flow fast.
Can I use it on tap water when the supply is affected?
Always follow your water supplier's advice. Hydren is designed for freshwater, including tap and stored water. It doesn't remove viruses or chemicals, so if your supplier says to boil the water, or that it's chemically contaminated, do what they say.
Can I filter seawater or pool water?
No. Hydren does not remove salt or chemicals, so it isn't suitable for seawater, pool water or anything with chemical contamination.
How do I clean it?
Blow back through the mouthpiece after each use. Every so often, push clean water backwards through the filter with the included syringe. Shake dry and cap both ends before storing.
